Demystifying Death: Informed Beginnings Make Peaceful Endings

“How strange this fear of death is! We are never frightened at a sunset.”

- George MacDonald, scholar & author

Well George, quotes are nice, but as boss witches, most of us want facts & options to help us decide on a course of action. And when it comes to death & dying, facts can be a little hard to come by. Death is a topic that so many of us were raised to avoid talking about, or perhaps only discuss in whispers. As we approach a time of year full up of traditions related to honoring our past and reflecting on what’s to come, The Coven is proud to present “Demystifying Death” - an open forum to provide information about:

  • Legal documents that can help your loved ones feel confident in honoring your wishes and attending to your affairs & how those documents are used after death

  • Resources that can make planning for long term care less overwhelming

  • Conscious dying choices and how to carry your values through your end of life

  • Conflict resolution paths related to family conflict that can arise around death & dying

The Coven welcomes our lawyer friends Emily Buchholz from Davis Law Office and Brenna Galvin from Maser Law as well as conscious dying and conflict resolution practitioners Leora and Eli Effinger-Weintraub for a short program and an open Q&A.

Own Your Worth

Own Your Worth

The fact is, most women end up solely responsible for their financial well-being at some point in their lives. Two major forces are at work: women live longer than men, and nearly half of couples will divorce.

UBS asked the women behind the statistics if they felt prepared once they were no longer a part of a couple. What we found is alarming. Nearly 60% of widows and divorcées tell us they regret not being more involved in key financial decision while they were married. Their advice to you— indeed, all investors—is unanimous: Single or married, millennial or boomer, take an active role in your finances.

Join us for an enlightening seminar that will show how to own your worth. Happy Hour to follow!

You'll learn:

·  Why many women aren't as active in their finances as they should be, and how to take a more active role regardless of your current level of involvement

·  Why it's critical to break the cycle

·  A three-step plan to help you take control of your wealth today

Fresh Start to Your Sexual Self-Care

Fresh Start to Your Sexual Self-Care

Imagine growing up in a sex positive household — a place where your parents talked naturally and openly about your body, sensuality and sexuality. A place where you learned the actual names for your genitals instead of calling them “private parts.” A place where you were encouraged to be curious and fascinated in your body, just the way it is. Imagine receiving sex education in school at an appropriate age (as opposed to not at all, or when you were far too old) about the joys and pleasures of physical intimacy and sex, rather than it being fear-based, scaring the heck out of you and leading to guilt, shame or denial of your natural, beautiful, omnipotent sexual self!

Join Dr. Rachel Allyn — holistic psychologist, yoga teacher, writer, and pleasure expert — as she engages us in a conversation around cultivating a fresh start to your sexual self-care. Because it’s never too late to embody an attitude that recognizes it’s your birthright to indulge in pleasure. An attitude believing that sexual health is a fundamental part of your overall wellbeing, and an appreciation for how your sexual energy inspires creativity, connection and vitality. Together we’ll integrate education and discussion, including answering all of your juiciest questions about your body, sex, and intimacy.

The Coven + AAICM Present: A Minneapolis Starlet: Hilda Simms

In 1944 Hilda Simms, a young woman from North Minneapolis, waited in the wings of the Mansfield Theater on Broadway. She was about to make her first appearance on Broadway and in doing so, she would help to shape Broadway history. Anna Lucasta was the first Broadway play to feature an all-black cast with a plot that did not center on racial themes.

Hilda's starring role as Anna Lucasta was just the beginning for this intellectual and creative woman. Hilda's move to New York in the 1940s would lead to a career on Broadway and in Hollywood where she was not only a brilliant actress, but a civil rights activist. In fact, her activism landed on her on the Hollywood Blacklist.

Join us for an evening with the African American Interpretive Center of Minnesota to learn about this Minneapolis starlet with a screening of Hilda Simms’ film work, a presentation on her life and work, and a Q&A with Hilda’s niece, Nannette Moses.

Tickets are available with an optional donation. All proceeds will benefit the AAICM.

Vinyasa Flow + Vino with Women in Digital

Coven members are invited to the exclusive Women in Digital members-only gathering for networking, yoga and wine class. Join for one hour of vinyasa flow to help you unwind from your busy day and a wine tasting class by Spillery Creative.

How often do we allow ourselves to turn off the noise and focus on our bodies and our minds? Because we are so plugged in all day long, this event is about seeking solace in a tech-free zone. In our yoga practice, embrace the quiet ambience and allow yourself to tune into your soul through body and mind. In wine class, we will be inspired by winemakers who use minimal technology and intervention to create natural wines that are pretty damn tasty, too.

This event is open to women and non-binary folks who are members of Women in Digital and/or members of the Coven, offering a great opportunity to connect with each other, learn what Women in Digital is all about.

About The Instructors:

Lilly Zabrowski is a Minneapolis native and mama of two boys who has been practicing yoga for over twelve years. She also teaches at Blooma, and is passionate about serving women, especially young moms. Other loves include wine and kick-ass women, so she's pretty excited about this event.

Lisa Priest’s passion for wine led her from London to Argentina to California, where she enjoyed sampling grapes on bike rides through vineyards. Now, she brings the stories of the people and places behind great wines to Minnesota, and helps people discover the wines that speak to them.

About Women in Digital Twin Cities:

Your digital talent makes you one of the most powerful women on the planet. Together, we join to share knowledge, to inspire each other and to become empowered by that strength. Our mission is to connect women in digital through engaging and educational events and to enable them with the confidence and tools necessary to exchange their power. More about Women in Digital here.
