Learning to Code!

Adults can learn to Code with TKP (Teaching Kids Programming) Courseware! In this interactive workshop, absolute beginner programmers (adults) can try out the free lessons from the non-profit TKP (www.teachingkidsprogramming.org). TKP has worked with teachers and kids world-wide for over 11 years. Although, the courseware is designed to introduce kids ages 10 and up to core computation concepts via Logo-style (turtle) programming, we have found that it's a fun way for adult 'non-programmers' to try out coding in a safe, fun format.

In this group format, the visiting teachers will lead small groups to work together to have fun and experience coding.

Paid Family and Medical Leave Town Hall

Paid Family and Medical Leave Town Hall

Women make up nearly half of Minnesota’s labor force (48 percent) and more than one-quarter of its business owners (27 percent).  However only 13% of Minnesota workers have access to paid family and medical leave. That means women are forced to face impossible choices when new children are born or adopted and when serious personal or family health needs inevitably arise.

As workers struggle to balance caregiving with their job responsibilities, many end up facing economic hardship. Caregiving demands may even lead to effects felt across years or a lifetime due to lost jobs, missed raises, and reduced Social Security benefits. Employers, especially small rural ones, are also struggling to attract and retain good workers in competition with larger metro area employers that can afford to offer such benefits. Our current system has failed and is costly to workers, their families, businesses, and our economy. It’s time to modernize our workplace standards and benefits.

At this townhall, we'll hear from experts/Moms/business owners and advocates about ways to address this and policy solutions that would provide paid family leave to all Minnesotans.

Speakers:

Stephanie Hogansen, from the Children's Defense Fund MN

Margi Scott, from Take12

Demystifying Death: Informed Beginnings Make Peaceful Endings

“How strange this fear of death is! We are never frightened at a sunset.”

- George MacDonald, scholar & author

Well George, quotes are nice, but as boss witches, most of us want facts & options to help us decide on a course of action. And when it comes to death & dying, facts can be a little hard to come by. Death is a topic that so many of us were raised to avoid talking about, or perhaps only discuss in whispers. As we approach a time of year full up of traditions related to honoring our past and reflecting on what’s to come, The Coven is proud to present “Demystifying Death” - an open forum to provide information about:

  • Legal documents that can help your loved ones feel confident in honoring your wishes and attending to your affairs & how those documents are used after death

  • Resources that can make planning for long term care less overwhelming

  • Conscious dying choices and how to carry your values through your end of life

  • Conflict resolution paths related to family conflict that can arise around death & dying

The Coven welcomes our lawyer friends Emily Buchholz from Davis Law Office and Brenna Galvin from Maser Law as well as conscious dying and conflict resolution practitioners Leora and Eli Effinger-Weintraub for a short program and an open Q&A.

Own Your Worth

Own Your Worth

The fact is, most women end up solely responsible for their financial well-being at some point in their lives. Two major forces are at work: women live longer than men, and nearly half of couples will divorce.

UBS asked the women behind the statistics if they felt prepared once they were no longer a part of a couple. What we found is alarming. Nearly 60% of widows and divorcées tell us they regret not being more involved in key financial decision while they were married. Their advice to you— indeed, all investors—is unanimous: Single or married, millennial or boomer, take an active role in your finances.

Join us for an enlightening seminar that will show how to own your worth. Happy Hour to follow!

You'll learn:

·  Why many women aren't as active in their finances as they should be, and how to take a more active role regardless of your current level of involvement

·  Why it's critical to break the cycle

·  A three-step plan to help you take control of your wealth today

Fresh Start to Your Sexual Self-Care

Imagine growing up in a sex positive household — a place where your parents talked naturally and openly about your body, sensuality and sexuality. A place where you learned the actual names for your genitals instead of calling them “private parts.” A place where you were encouraged to be curious and fascinated in your body, just the way it is. Imagine receiving sex education in school at an appropriate age (as opposed to not at all, or when you were far too old) about the joys and pleasures of physical intimacy and sex, rather than it being fear-based, scaring the heck out of you and leading to guilt, shame or denial of your natural, beautiful, omnipotent sexual self!

Join Dr. Rachel Allyn — holistic psychologist, yoga teacher, writer, and pleasure expert — as she engages us in a conversation around cultivating a fresh start to your sexual self-care. Because it’s never too late to embody an attitude that recognizes it’s your birthright to indulge in pleasure. An attitude believing that sexual health is a fundamental part of your overall wellbeing, and an appreciation for how your sexual energy inspires creativity, connection and vitality. Together we’ll integrate education and discussion, including answering all of your juiciest questions about your body, sex, and intimacy.
